Modern calibration processes

Accuracy is important in any type of experiment and machine used in the same. The dependency on accuracy is essential to maintain consistency and compare standards internationally. This is also why, national laboratories were established. A National Metrology Institute (NMI) thus exists in every country. This will maintain primary standards of measurement (the main SI units plus a number of derived units) which will be used to provide traceability to customer's instruments by calibration.

Quality

Calibration quality is crucial to improve and maintain consistency in the results. In fact, another important point to ensure is to make it “traceable” so that it is accepted internationally as defined by the measurement units. It is also a formal way to compare to a standard that is related to national standards (such as NIST in the USA), or international and certified reference materials.

Purpose and scope

Calibration process requires the instrument to be of such a design that can be calibrated. And as per the requirement, the design has to be able to “hold a calibration” through its calibration interval. This is also called as “within engineering tolerance” that is the design should be able of measurements when used within the stated environmental conditions over a reasonable period of time.
